Official Study A Broad Guidlines:

CCV Study abroad course proposal guidelines: We are currently seeking course proposals for spring 2014.  Proposals with travel to England, Belize or Costa Rica will not be considered for this semester as we have just recently run courses to these countries.

Proposals are due by Thursday, March 21, 2013.

At the core of CCV’s mission is our dedication to providing access to education. Study Abroad programs allow students access to another country, another culture, and what may seem like another world. Participants benefit from the opportunity to learn first-hand in a rich environment, and frequently describe the experience as having changed their lives forever.
Study Abroad courses are offered during the fall and spring semesters; the trips run at the end of these semesters, during the January and May intersessional periods. However, proposals for summer courses will also be considered.

When reviewing proposals, the Study Abroad Committee will consider the following factors:
  • How does the travel component of the proposed course enhance students’ learning of the essential objectives?
  • Does the faculty have experience with course content? Leading groups of students outside of the classroom?  With travel?
  • Will the course and travel component have broad appeal to students?
  • Is the travel component affordable? Travel fees are generally between $2,500 and $3,500.
  • Is the weather at proposed time of travel conducive to travel and to learning?

COURSE FORMAT
  • Study Abroad is offered under the umbrella of existing 3-credit CCV courses.
  • For the most part, selected study abroad courses fit into general education competency requirements.
  • Typically, there are 5 to 6 class sessions and an eight to ten day travel component. On-ground courses typically meet on Saturdays from 10:00 to 2:00 or 3:00 at a centrally located CCV academic center.
  • Class sessions may meet on-ground, as a hybrid of on-ground and online, or online with one on-ground session.

COURSE LOGISTICS
  • Class size typically ranges from12 - 18 to make group travelling manageable. To make travelling more affordable, minimum enrollment to run a study abroad course is typically 12 students.
  • Course enrollment priority is given to current CCV students.
  • Costs of the trip and a food per diem for the faculty member are provided in addition to teaching salary.
  • A CCV staff member will accompany faculty and students on all trips.
  • All trips must be organized through a travel provider.

SAMPLE ITINERARIES
  • We ask that all proposals include a proposed sample itinerary.  To view sample itineraries to gather ideas, you can visit itineraries from the following travel providers:
  • *If for some reason you do decide to contact a provider with a question, do NOT enter into a contract.  You MUST clearly communicate that you are working on a proposal only, and that you do not have the authority to enter into a contract or make decisions for CCV.

WORKING WITH PROVIDERS
  • Cost of travel is a great concern for CCV students, so we must work to ensure we are offering the best quality program at the most reasonable cost. Because quality and costs associated with providers can vary widely, the committee will seek estimates and select and work with a provider.

with preference given to those that fulfill general education competency requirements)
  • faculty credentials that align with the subject
  • explanation as to how the proposed travel component of the course will enhance students’ learning of the course essential objectives
  • an account of instructional strategy including:
    • pre-trip activities designed to build community, promote interpersonal communication and facilitate positive group dynamics

  • faculty member’s past experience with study abroad and/or travel and leading groups of students

* The Study Abroad Committee encourages proposals with a service learning component.

FACULTY PAYMENT

Faculty of study abroad courses will be paid CCV’s standard three-credit course rate. Costs of the trip and a food per diem for the faculty member are provided in addition to teaching salary. Transportation to and from the airport of departure as well as entry fees to museums, etc. are considered part of the costs of the trip and, therefore, are covered by the study abroad program.

FACULTY POLICY

Study abroad faculty members are bound by the same policies that govern all teaching at CCV.

STUDY ABROAD COMMITTEE RESPONSIBILITIES

The committee, in concert with faculty, will develop an accepted proposal.  The committee will give final approval for course dates, itinerary and budget. Members of the committee will also take part in pre-trip orientation activities. The Study Abroad Committee will take responsibility for all administrative functions in relation to running the course, including the setting of timetables, publishing of information in course lists and promotional materials, recruitment of students, and the provision of forms and information to coordinators (pre-registration) and students (post-registration). The committee will track all student paperwork and money (including collecting fees, paying bills, and dealing with expenses while abroad) and will make sure students have the necessary documentation prior to travel time. The committee will also manage all liability, insurance and legal matters and oversee trip safety and discipline. The committee will also collect and catalog post-trip evaluations.

FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES

The faculty member will be responsible for meeting deadlines and submitting timely information to the Study Abroad Committee as requested; for helping to develop all budgets; for providing detailed lesson plans and syllabi, including orientation activities; for preparing a high quality program and experience for students; for providing students with a post-trip opportunity for discussion of their experiences; for submitting timely final grades and course evaluations;  and for providing the committee with appropriate student materials for use in future study abroad promotions and orientations. Depending upon the nature of the trip and the provider used, faculty may be asked to work in concert with the committee to coordinate travel contacts, travel arrangements, and activities.  Additionally, faculty teaching a study abroad course for the first time will be evaluated early in the semester by a member of the study abroad committee.
